Hello again, Club 720 squad!
So far, we've introduced the concept of credit and discussed how our partner banks can help you build a solid credit foundation. Today, let's zoom in on a key part of your credit journey - understanding your credit score.
What is a Credit Score?
A credit score is a three-digit number that lenders use to assess your creditworthiness. It ranges from 300 to 850, with higher numbers representing better credit. But what makes up this number? Let's break it down.
Payment History (35%)
Your history of paying bills on time contributes the most to your credit score. Even a single missed payment can impact this portion of your score, so make sure to stay on top of your bills!
Credit Utilization (30%)
This refers to how much of your available credit you're using. For example, if you have a credit card with a $1,000 limit and a $200 balance, your credit utilization is 20%. Aim to keep this number below 30%.
Length of Credit History (15%)
This portion of your score considers how long you've had credit. This includes the age of your oldest account, the age of your newest account, and the average age of all your accounts.
Credit Mix (10%)
Lenders like to see a mix of different types of credit, like credit cards, student loans, and car loans. However, don't rush to open different types of accounts all at once – it’s more important to manage your existing credit responsibly.
New Credit (10%)
Opening too many new credit accounts in a short period can indicate risk to lenders, which can lower your score. Be strategic when applying for new credit.
Why Does This Matter?
Understanding your credit score is vital because it impacts your ability to access financial products like loans and credit cards. A good credit score can help you secure loans with better interest rates, which ultimately saves you money and aids in wealth building.
At Club 720, we're all about empowering you with the knowledge you need to navigate your financial journey with confidence. And understanding your credit score is a key part of that journey.
